Dame Mitsuko Uchida has become a cherished presence at Princeton University Concerts. Whether appearing as soloist with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, in duo partnership with pianist Jonathan Biss, or in song recital alongside tenor Mark Padmore, she has continually deepened her connection with Princeton audiences, reminding us each time why she is regarded as one of the defining pianists of our time. We now welcome her back in the most intimate setting: a solo recital program featuring music of remarkable inwardness. Joseph Haydn’s haunting set of F Minor Variations and Mozart’s deeply introspective Rondo in A Minor frame Arnold Schoenberg’s concentrated Six Little Piano Pieces, music that distills an entire emotional world into moments of striking brevity. The evening culminates in Schubert’s Piano Sonata in A Major, D. 959 — one of the composer’s final works and among the most expansive and humane statements in the piano repertoire. To close our season with these extraordinary works— and with an artist so uniquely attuned to their spirit — is a rare privilege.
